Tupac Shakur is shot in Las Vegas
After the Mike Tyson-Bruce Seldon WBA heavyweight title fight at the MGM Grand, Tupac and Suge Knight are involved in a brief assault on Orlando Anderson in the casino lobby. Hours later, as Knight drives Tupac in a BMW through the intersection of East Flamingo Road and Koval Lane, a white Cadillac pulls alongside; a passenger fires four shots into the BMW. Tupac is hit four times. He dies at University Medical Center six days later on September 13.
Why it matters
Tupac's killing is the most consequential death in hip-hop history. The investigation remained formally unsolved for almost three decades; in 2023 the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police arrested Duane 'Keffe D' Davis on a murder charge linked to the shooting. The killing collapses Death Row's commercial dominance, escalates the East/West conflict that produces Biggie's killing six months later, and reshapes the way the industry handles artist security for the next quarter century.
