Ol' Dirty Bastard interrupts Shawn Colvin's Grammy acceptance speech

At the 40th Annual Grammy Awards at Radio City Music Hall, Ol' Dirty Bastard climbs onto the stage during Shawn Colvin's acceptance speech for Song of the Year ('Sunny Came Home') and declares that 'Wu-Tang is for the children.' The interruption — partly in response to Wu-Tang Forever's loss of Best Rap Album to Puff Daddy's No Way Out — becomes one of the most-discussed Grammy moments of the late 1990s.

Why it matters

February 25, 1998. At the 40th Grammy Awards at Radio City Music Hall, Ol' Dirty Bastard climbed onto the stage during Shawn Colvin's acceptance speech for Song of the Year. Colvin had just won for "Sunny Came Home." ODB, in a black satin shirt, took the microphone and said, with the camera on his face: "I went and bought me an outfit today that costed a lot of money. Today, because I figured that Wu-Tang was gonna win. I don't know how you all see it, but when it comes to the children, Wu-Tang is for the children. We teach the children. You know what I mean? Puffy is good, but Wu-Tang is the best." Wu-Tang Forever had lost the Best Rap Album Grammy to Puff Daddy's No Way Out earlier that night. ODB took it personally. The interruption was carried live on CBS. "Wu-Tang is for the children" became one of the most-quoted rap phrases of the late 90s. Shawn Colvin took it gracefully. The Recording Academy did not invite ODB back to the Grammys. He died six years later. You should watch the clip. It is, in its own way, perfect.
