Juice WRLD dies of an accidental overdose at Chicago's Midway Airport
Jarad Higgins suffers a fatal seizure as federal agents board his private jet at Midway International Airport in Chicago. Toxicology subsequently attributes the death to an accidental overdose of oxycodone and codeine. He was 21. *Legends Never Die*, his posthumous album released in July 2020, debuts at #1 on the Billboard 200 with the second-largest opening week for any 2020 album.
Why it matters
Juice WRLD's death — three months after Mac Miller, one year after Lil Peep, eighteen months after XXX — closes the run of high-profile streaming-era rapper deaths from prescription-opioid (often counterfeit, often fentanyl-laced) overdoses. Higgins's open-throated lyrical engagement with depression, self-medication, and the precise mechanics of pill addiction had given him, in *Goodbye & Good Riddance* (2018) and *Death Race for Love* (2019), an artist's account of the substances that killed him. The Federal Aviation Administration subsequently issues rule changes around private-jet boarding and search procedures driven in part by the circumstances of the death.
