Kanye West releases 'The College Dropout'
Roc-A-Fella issues Kanye West's solo debut. By 2004, West is established as a producer (the Blueprint, multiple top-shelf Bad Boy and Roc-A-Fella credits) but has spent two years struggling to be heard as a rapper. *The College Dropout* — heavily delayed after his October 2002 near-fatal car accident in Los Angeles, which inspired 'Through the Wire' — debuts at #2 and goes 4x platinum.
Why it matters
*The College Dropout* changes who is allowed to be a commercially central hip-hop artist. Kanye's middle-class Chicago background, his explicit lyrical interest in self-doubt, racism, religion, and consumer culture, his sample-heavy chipmunk-soul production, and the bear-mascot graphic identity together expand what mainstream hip-hop can sound and look like. Every later 'producer becomes star' arc (Drake's friend 40, Pharrell's solo arcs, Tyler the Creator's evolution into auteur, Metro Boomin's *Heroes & Villains*) maps to the precedent.
