Terrence LeVarr Thornton

May 13, 1977 · b. Bronx · from Virginia Beach

a.k.a. Pusha, King Push, Terrar, Tonny

Bio

Terrence Thornton is Pusha T. He is the rare rapper whose forty-year career has had two distinct peaks, one in each format: the duo era (with his brother Malice, as Clipse, 2002 to 2009), and the solo era (under Kanye's G.O.O.D. Music, 2010 to the present). Both peaks are real. Both are loaded with classic verses about, mostly, dealing cocaine.

He was born Terrence LeVarr Thornton on May 13, 1977, in the Bronx, and raised in Virginia Beach, Virginia. His older brother Gene (later Malice, later No Malice) is two years older. They started rapping together in their late teens. They linked with producer-duo the Neptunes (Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo), also from Virginia, in the late 1990s. The Clipse mixtapes circulated. Then in 2002, Clipse's major-label debut Lord Willin' came out on Arista. "Grindin'" was the single. The beat was four notes and a clap. The verses were three minutes of detailed cocaine accounting. The song peaked at number 30 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also reset the standard for what minimal, drum-driven rap could sound like.

Hell Hath No Fury came out in 2006 after a four-year label-purgatory delay. The album is widely considered one of the best rap records of the 2000s. "Mr. Me Too," "Wamp Wamp," "Keys Open Doors." Clipse's third album, Til the Casket Drops (2009), is also good. Then Malice converted to Christianity, rebranded as No Malice, and stepped away from rapping about drugs.

Pusha pivoted to solo. Kanye West signed him to G.O.O.D. Music in 2010. My Name Is My Name (2013) is the solo debut. King Push: Darkest Before Dawn (2015). Daytona (2018), produced entirely by Kanye, all seven tracks, 21 minutes long. It is, in any reasonable accounting, the best solo Pusha record. Pitchfork gave it Best New Music.

Then "The Story of Adidon" (May 2018). Pusha released it as part of his Daytona-era beef with Drake. The track is six minutes long. It revealed Drake's previously-hidden son Adonis. It accused Drake of having a Black-face photo in his closet. It accused Drake's father of being absent. It demolished Drake. Drake did not meaningfully respond. It is, by every honest measure, the most decisive rap diss of the streaming era prior to the Kendrick / Drake exchange of 2024.

It's Almost Dry (2022), Pusha's fourth solo, debuted at number one. Clipse reunited in 2024 for a single, "Birds Don't Sing," with Pharrell production. They have promised a full reunion album.

He is, in 2026, forty-eight years old. He has been making drug-dealer rap, with full literary commitment, for over twenty years. He has never made a bad album. The catalog is small relative to his peers because he is meticulous. That is part of why the catalog is what it is.
