Kendrick Lamar Duckworth
Jun 17, 1987 · b. Compton
a.k.a. K. Dot, King Kendrick, Kung Fu Kenny, Mr. Morale, Oklama
Bio
Kendrick Lamar is the best rapper of his generation. That is not really in dispute anymore. The dispute that remains is whether he is the best rapper of the twenty-first century, the answer to which depends on how you weight Eminem's sales against Kendrick's catalog. The Drake beef of 2024 settled most of the remaining questions.
He was born Kendrick Lamar Duckworth on June 17, 1987, in Compton, California. He grew up in the city. He went to Centennial High in Compton. He came up rapping as K-Dot, putting out mixtapes through his teens. He signed with Top Dawg Entertainment, a small Carson, California, label, in 2005. He was 18.
Section.80 (2011) is the first one. Good Kid, M.A.A.D City (October 2012) is the Top Dawg / Aftermath / Interscope major-label debut, a concept album about a single chaotic night in Compton, told from the perspective of a kid who was him. The album sold over a million copies in its first year. To Pimp a Butterfly (March 2015) is the political-jazz-funk-Black-history record that made him the most-discussed rapper of his decade. DAMN. (April 2017) won the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Music, the first rap album to win the category.
Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers (May 2022) is the therapy album. It is denser, more interior, more difficult than the earlier work. It splits opinion. Some of his fans think it is his masterpiece. Others think it is the album where he finally talks too much.
Then 2024. Drake released "Push Ups" in April, targeting Kendrick. Kendrick released "Euphoria" five days later. They went back and forth for a month. The full chronology has its own page. The summary: by mid-May, Kendrick had released "Not Like Us" — a hit single, a Grammy winner, a verdict — and the rap-Twitter consensus had locked in. Kendrick won. The beef revived his commercial profile dramatically. "Not Like Us" sat at the top of the Billboard Hot 100. Kendrick performed it at the Super Bowl halftime show in February 2025, the first solo headliner who was a hip-hop artist.
GNX, his sixth studio album, dropped without warning on November 22, 2024. It debuted at number one. It sold a million in its first week. As of 2026 it is still in heavy rotation.
Kendrick's overall position is now: the most-respected MC of the modern era, the most-watched halftime performer in NFL history, a Pulitzer winner, a Grammy winner, a successful executive (he founded pgLang in 2020, his creative company that produces films and writes copy and is, by all accounts, mostly his way of getting his friends paid). He is, in 2026, thirty-eight years old. He is at the peak of his powers. He probably has another decade of records left in him. You should be paying attention.
