Bio
Eric Barrier is Eric B. He is the DJ half of Eric B. & Rakim, which is to say he is one half of one of the two or three most influential rap duos in the genre's history. The other guy, Rakim, gets most of the press. This is, in important ways, by design.
He was born in Queens in 1963. He was DJing on Marley Marl's WBLS-FM radio show in the mid-1980s when he started looking for an MC to work with. He found William Griffin Jr. via a mutual connection in Long Island. Griffin was eighteen, called himself Kid Wizard, and seemed quiet. They cut a demo. The demo became "Eric B. Is President" / "My Melody," 1986, Zakia Records, possibly the most influential 12-inch in rap history.
What Eric B. brought to the partnership was the production architecture. He cut up James Brown samples ("Funky President," "Funky Drummer," "The Payback") in ways the genre had not heard. The beats are slow. The bass is forward. The sample chops are precise. Rakim's vocal style — that flat, calm, internally-rhyming, dead-on-the-beat delivery — only lands the way it lands because Eric B. built him a track that gave him the room to land it on.
Paid in Full (1987) is the canonical document. Follow the Leader (1988), Let the Rhythm Hit 'Em (1990), and Don't Sweat the Technique (1992) followed. Four albums total. By 1992 the partnership was breaking down. Eric B. and Rakim got into a contract dispute that took years to settle. They essentially did not speak for fifteen years.
They reunited for live performances starting in the late 2000s. Eric B. has had a quieter post-Rakim career than Rakim has. He has DJed. He has produced occasionally. He has stayed mostly out of the press. He gave one of the great rap interviews to Frannie Kelley and Ali Shaheed Muhammad on the Microphone Check podcast, where he was, by all accounts, kind, plain-spoken, and very ready to give Rakim 80 percent of the credit for what the two of them did together.
This is what Eric B. is, fundamentally. He is the architect. He is the guy who, when you ask him about Paid in Full, points at Rakim. He is the guy who knew, in 1986, that if you put William Griffin in front of the right beat, what would come out the other end would change rapping forever. He was right. He is, in 2026, sixty-two years old, still DJing, still credited, still half of the duo.
