Cindy Campbell
from Bronx
a.k.a. The First Lady of Hip-Hop
Bio
The story of hip-hop's birth used to go like this: "On August 11, 1973, DJ Kool Herc threw a party at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue." Notice what's missing? The actual person who threw the party.
Cindy Campbell was sixteen. She was Herc's younger sister. She wanted nicer back-to-school clothes than her family could afford. So she rented the rec room of her family's apartment building. She charged twenty-five cents for the women and fifty cents for the men. She handwrote the flyer. She picked the prices. She picked the DJ.
I am telling you, the founding moment of hip-hop was a girl trying to make rent on a new outfit.
The party brought in a few hundred dollars. Cindy got her clothes. Clive (that is, Herc, the family DJ but not yet a hip-hop DJ, because hip-hop did not yet exist) got to try out the Merry-Go-Round, the technique he had been thinking about, in front of an audience that wasn't his cousins. And while Clive was on the tables, his friend Coke La Rock got on the mic and just talked over the breaks. That is the first hip-hop MC performance anyone can document. So at the same party, on the same night, with the same playlist: the genre's first DJ set and the genre's first rap verse. The night Cindy threw to make a couple hundred bucks invented two of the four elements.
She kept living in the Bronx. She did not have a music career. For about forty years, people writing about hip-hop's origins referred to "DJ Kool Herc's party at 1520 Sedgwick" like the party generated itself. NPR did a piece on her in August 2023, for the genre's fiftieth, that put her at the center of the founding moment. The Smithsonian's NMAAHC acquired her flyer and her records. The standard historical opening line started to add her name back in.
She still has the flyer. She has it framed. It is a sheet of notebook paper torn at the edges. It is also, in the most literal possible sense, the founding document of hip-hop. Cindy Campbell knew it was important enough to keep. The rest of us are still catching up to her.
