DJ Screw began circulating chopped-and-screwed mixtapes in Houston in the early 1990s; 1995 is the rough crystallization point with his 'Diary of the Originator' series, and Swishahouse (founded 1997 by Michael Watts and OG Ron C) extended the style commercially.
