Summary

Charlie Ahearn's narrative-documentary hybrid set in the South Bronx, following graffiti writer Zoro (Lee Quiñones) as he navigates the four elements of early hip-hop. Shot on location with non-actors playing themselves, the film features Grandmaster Flash, Fab Five Freddy, the Cold Crush Brothers, the Rock Steady Crew, and a climactic concert at an East River amphitheater.

Hip-hop relevance

Widely cited as the first hip-hop feature film and the most important visual document of the culture's foundational years. It introduced graffiti, breaking, MCing and DJing to international audiences and remains a primary source for the look, sound and geography of pre-1984 New York hip-hop.
