Rhyme & Reason

Director1

  • Peter Spirer

Summary

Peter Spirer's documentary surveys mid-1990s hip-hop through interviews with more than 80 artists including Nas, the Notorious B.I.G., Dr. Dre, Ice-T, Ice Cube, Method Man, Raekwon, Chuck D, KRS-One, MC Lyte, Salt-N-Pepa and Wu-Tang Clan. Conversations span origins, the East/West tension, women in hip-hop and the business behind the music.

Hip-hop relevance

One of the most comprehensive talking-head documentaries of the era, released months after Tupac's death and weeks before Biggie's, capturing voices that would soon be lost. Spirer was Oscar-nominated for the related short Blood Ties; Rhyme & Reason became a touchstone reference for later hip-hop docs.
