Beef

Director1

  • Peter Spirer

Summary

Peter Spirer's documentary chronicles a series of hip-hop feuds — from Kool Moe Dee vs Busy Bee and LL Cool J vs Kool Moe Dee to the Bridge Wars, Ice Cube vs N.W.A., Tupac vs Biggie, and Jay-Z vs Nas — through interviews with the principals and a narration by Ving Rhames. The film spawned three sequels (Beef II–IV).

Hip-hop relevance

The first feature documentary to treat the diss-record tradition as its own narrative form, with on-camera testimony from many of the rappers involved. It crystallized public understanding of 'beef' as a genre convention rather than only a personal dispute.
