Hip-hop relevance

Russell Simmons launched Phat Farm in 1992 as a casual-luxury preppy line that consciously rejected hip-hop's prevailing oversized streetwear aesthetic of the early 1990s. The Phat Fashions group (including Baby Phat, founded by Kimora Lee Simmons in 1998) was sold to Kellwood in 2004 for a reported $140 million.
